What Causes Black Streaks on Asphalt Shingle Roofs?
The algae behind those dark roof planes in the Carolinas, why it spreads street by street, and how it's addressed without pressure.
Every summer, whole streets in the Carolinas seem to develop the same symptom at the same time: dark, parallel streaking running down the shingles, worst on the shaded sides of roofs. Homeowners notice it on neighbors' houses first, then on their own. Here's what's actually happening up there, and what to do about it.
It's not dirt, and it's not the shingles aging
The black streaking on asphalt shingle roofs is commonly associated with a type of cyanobacteria, the name most often cited is Gloeocapsa magma, that colonizes the shingle surface. It feeds on the limestone filler used in modern asphalt shingles, spreads as airborne spores, and darkens as it develops its UV-protective outer coating. That dark coating is exactly the color you're seeing from the driveway.
Because it spreads through the air, it moves house to house and street to street. One colonized roof in a neighborhood becomes six within a few seasons. Humidity, shade, and morning dew, all abundant in Indian Land, determine how fast it takes hold.
Why the pattern matters
Notice where the streaks concentrate: below roof edges, under tree shade, on north and east planes that dry slowly. Algae needs moisture and tolerates shade. The sun-baked south face of a roof often stays clean for years while the shaded side streaks heavily, a pattern that confirms you're looking at biology, not soot or aging.
What it does (and doesn't) mean for your roof
We'll be straightforward, because roofers sometimes aren't: streaking is an appearance and moisture issue, not automatically an emergency. The algae colony holds moisture against the shingle surface and discolors it. What it doesn't mean is that your roof needs replacing this month, or that cleaning it will add a guaranteed number of years to its life, be skeptical of anyone quoting either.
What responsible treatment does: it addresses the living organism causing the staining, restores the roof's appearance, and removes a moisture-holding film from the shingle surface. It does this without mechanical force.
Why pressure is the wrong tool for a roof
Asphalt shingles are protected by a layer of ceramic-coated granules, the gritty texture you feel on a new shingle. Those granules shield the asphalt from UV degradation. Concentrated water pressure dislodges granules, and the damage is cumulative and permanent: every pressure wash strips protection the shingle can't rebuild.
Proper roof cleaning is a treatment process with minimal pressure: a shingle-appropriate solution is applied at low pressure, given dwell time to address the growth, and left for rain and time to fully equalize the appearance. Sometimes it looks dramatic quickly; heavier colonization equalizes over weeks with rainfall.
The part most people never consider: everything below the roofline
Roof treatment means everything under the eaves is in the runoff path, flower beds, shrubs, lawn. Professional roof cleaning is as much about property protection as it is about the roof: pre-wetting plantings, covering delicate areas, rinsing continuously during application. Ask any company you're considering how they protect landscaping during roof work. The answer is very revealing.
Can you prevent it?
Not entirely in this climate, spores travel by air, and humidity is not optional in the Carolinas. Trim trees back to let sun and airflow reach the roof, keep gutters flowing so moisture doesn't back up, and treat the streaking when it appears rather than letting colonies mature for years. Some newer shingles include algae-resistant granules; they slow colonization but don't prevent it entirely.
