Why decks and fences are different
Cedar, pine, pressure-treated lumber, tropical hardwoods, and composites each respond differently to water, pressure, and cleaning agents. Weathered wood also hides its fragility, the gray surface is dead fibers over sound structure, and one aggressive pass with the wrong tip can leave fuzzing, gouges, and split board edges.
We start with the material: identify the wood or composite, test an inconspicuous area, then choose pressure and chemistry accordingly. The goal is a clean, brightened surface with the grain intact, a clean slate, whether you plan to leave it natural or pursue staining afterward.
What cleaning includes
A deck or fence cleaning typically involves:
- Material assessment, wood species or composite, fastener type, current finish
- Pre-treatment with a wood-appropriate cleaner to kill mildew and lift gray oxidation
- Controlled rinsing at wood-safe pressure with wide-fan tips
- Optional brightening agent to neutralize cleaner and restore warmer tones
- Care around plants, lawns, and adjacent structures

We clean and brighten. Staining and sealing are separate crafts with their own products, timing, and weather windows, we don't bundle them in as an afterthought. If you plan to stain after cleaning, we'll give you honest guidance on drying time and preparation so the finish you choose goes onto a properly prepped surface.

Can you clean composite decking?
Yes, composites need their own approach: gentler pressure and cleaners matched to the manufacturer's material. We adjust the method to what your deck is actually made of.
Will cleaning damage weathered wood?
Aggressive washing can, that's true with any provider. Material-appropriate pressure, wide fans, and proper cleaning agents minimize risk to already-weathered boards. We test first and flag any boards that are too fragile to treat aggressively.
Do you stain or seal decks after cleaning?
Cleaning and brightening are our craft; staining and sealing are best handled as a dedicated finishing project. We'll prepare the surface properly and share timing guidance so your stain application succeeds.
How long after cleaning before I can use the deck?
Usually the same day once surfaces have dried to the touch, though we'll give specific guidance based on weather, shade, and the cleaning agents used.
